Editor's Note

Nine establishments landed in the closure and major violation column this week. Three corrected their violations and passed re-inspection within days. Quesadilla Way remains closed as of publication.
The recurring themes were ice machines and sanitizer buckets reading zero. Not exciting, but those same problems show up in almost every serious entry below. Have a good week!

Closures & Major Violations

These establishments were closed by inspectors or received violations serious enough to pose an immediate public health risk. Violations in this category include evidence of pests, improper food temperature control, contaminated food-contact surfaces, or conditions that create imminent danger to public health. A follow-up inspection is required before any closed establishment can reopen, and some may face additional scrutiny or civil penalties.

American Legion Post 13, 1201 Mountain Rd NE. Inspected August 4. A cranberry juice container in the bar cooler had visible mold, and pickle juice was holding at 48 degrees in a cooler that could not stay below 41. The bar sanitizer measured zero parts per million, and the facility was operating on an expired permit. Result: unsatisfactory, re-inspection required.

Bee Hive Homes of Taylor Ranch, 6004 Whiteman Dr NW. Inspected August 3. Inspectors found live and dead German cockroaches under the kitchen cabinets, hand wash station, and three-compartment sink, with no pest control in place. The wiping cloth sanitizer tested at zero. Result: closure, re-inspection required. A follow-up inspection on August 7 passed with an Approved grade after the violations were corrected.

Churchs Chicken #2020, 10230 Central Ave NE. Inspected August 7 after a substantiated complaint. Roaches, flies, and gnats were living and dead throughout the kitchen and dining room, with roughly 15 cockroaches and overfull traps. The hand sink leaked grey water onto the floor, and pickles on the cook line held at 56 degrees. Result: closure, re-inspection required.

Hotel Parq Central, 806 Central Ave SE. Inspected August 4. The ice machine had extreme black organic buildup, egg frittatas held at 102 degrees, and the three-compartment sink sanitizer read zero. The inspection resulted in a closure, downgraded to unsatisfactory after the operator corrected three priority violations on site. A follow-up on August 5 upgraded the facility to Approved. All kitchen staff were required to take a food safety course.

Indian Cuisine LLC DBA Taaj Palace, 1435 Eubank Blvd NE. Inspected August 6. Ajax cleaner was stored directly above an open bin of sugar, paint primer next to sugar packets, and liquid nails next to food coloring. Raw chicken sat above cooked chicken, raw eggs sat on croissants, and the three-compartment sink had a cracked basin leaking onto the floor. Result: closure, re-inspection required. A separate inspection the same day rated the establishment conditional approved.

Paleteria Michoacana El Paraiso, 9001 Central Ave NE. Inspected August 7. More than a dozen cold items were out of temperature, including watermelon at 69 degrees and cantaloupe at 67. The facility had no thermometer, no sanitizer set up, no hand drying at the sink, and was operating on an expired permit. Result: closure, re-inspection required. A concurrent inspection rated it conditional approved.

Peter Piper Pizza, 3109 San Mateo Blvd NE. Inspected August 4 after a substantiated complaint. Buffet pasta held at 92 degrees and salads at 53, sanitizer buckets read zero, and the ice machine dripped black and brown organic matter onto the ice. Result: closure, re-inspection required. A separate inspection the same day passed with an Approved grade.

Quesadilla Way LLC, 5305 Gibson Blvd SE. Inspected August 7. Flies were landing on food-contact surfaces throughout the kitchen, dish pit, and lobby, and carne asada held at 93 degrees while other items sat in the 40s and 50s. Ice machine grey water pooled on the floor and tracked into the walk-in cooler. Result: closure, re-inspection required. The establishment is listed as closed.

Quality Inn and Suites, 5601 Alameda Blvd NE. Inspected August 3. This was a corrective action visit that upgraded the facility from a closure to unsatisfactory after the operator corrected cold holding, sanitizer, handwashing, and plumbing violations. Result: unsatisfactory, re-inspection required. A follow-up on August 5 passed with an Approved grade.

Conditional Approvals

These establishments remain open but were given conditional approval following their inspection. They were found to have violations that, while not immediately dangerous, require prompt correction. Each must address the identified issues within a defined window set by inspectors. Failure to correct the violations within that timeframe triggers a mandatory re-inspection and may result in conditional status being revoked or the establishment being closed.
