Editor's Note

This week's report covers 22 inspections across 20 establishments. Four facilities received a Red, Closed, or Unsatisfactory grade: Japanese Kitchen, Rising Star Chinese Eatery, Starry Moon, and Stripes Burrito. Chlorine sanitizer measuring zero parts per million at the dish machine or wiping cloth bucket appeared at six establishments.

Closures & Major Violations

These establishments were closed by inspectors or received violations serious enough to pose an immediate public health risk. Violations in this category include evidence of pests, improper food temperature control, contaminated food-contact surfaces, or conditions that create imminent danger to public health. A follow-up inspection is required before any closed establishment can reopen, and some may face additional scrutiny or civil penalties.

Japanese Kitchen, 6521 Americas Pkwy NE
Inspected September 28. The chlorine sanitizer in the automatic dish machine measured zero parts per million. An employee rinsed hands after handling raw shrimp in a three compartment sink with no soap or paper towels, then returned to the shrimp. Ready to eat foods, including chopped onion and imitation crab, had no date marking. One of two permits at this address was graded Unsatisfactory with a re-inspection required. The second permit passed.

Rising Star Chinese Eatery, 7001 San Antonio Dr NE
Inspected September 28. Fried chicken sat at 99 to 101 degrees nearly three hours into cooling, when it should have reached 70 degrees within two. An employee rinsed a bowl that held raw beef and shelved it as clean. Pot stickers in a prep cooler measured 75 degrees. Graded Closure, re-inspection required. A same day complaint inspection was approved.

Starry Moon, 10131 Coors Blvd NW
Inspected September 28. Mouse droppings were found behind prep tables, sinks, and the grease trap, with no pest control in place. The ice machine interior had soil buildup and rust. A front prep cooler held an ambient temperature of 89.9 degrees, and sanitizer in a wiping cloth bucket exceeded 200 parts per million. Graded Closure, re-inspection required. A September 30 corrective action visit left the facility at Red Unsatisfactory for five days, approved to operate pending re-inspection.

Stripes Burrito LLC, 10621 Unser Blvd NW, B5
Inspected September 29. Pooled eggs were stored in bulk, including eight five gallon buckets in the walk in cooler, not prepared for any order. Two pans of chicharrones sat uncovered under a prep table. Soil buildup covered prep tables, racks, fryers, grill, and door gaskets throughout the kitchen. Graded Unsatisfactory, re-inspection required.

Conditional Approvals

These establishments remain open but were given conditional approval following their inspection. They were found to have violations that, while not immediately dangerous, require prompt correction. Each must address the identified issues within a defined window set by inspectors. Failure to correct the violations within that timeframe triggers a mandatory re-inspection and may result in conditional status being revoked or the establishment being closed.

Murphy Express #8909, 221 Unser Blvd SW
Inspected September 29. The back handwashing sink had no soap or hand drying provisions, and a mop was stored in the sink. Floors, walk in coolers, and bathrooms had debris buildup, and no toilet tissue was available. Graded Conditional Approved.

Notable Passes

These establishments passed their inspections and are approved to operate, but received violations worth knowing about. The issues documented did not rise to the level required for closure or conditional status, but represent areas where food safety practices fell short of the standard. All entries include the establishment address so readers can identify locations they frequent.

Horizon Bagels & Cafe LLC, 4016 Louisiana Blvd NE, Suite D. A food employee prepared entrees with no hair restraint. A soiled mop was stored inside its bucket, and the kitchen kept no temperature or calibration logs.

Hotel Andaluz, 125 2nd St NW. The bar area dish machine dispensed chlorine sanitizer at zero concentration.

Kids Planet CDC, 1200 4th St SW. No certified food protection manager on staff, debris inside the oven and on dish shelving, and no temperature or calibration logs.

KR Goods LLC DBA Monaco Market, 4400 Wyoming Blvd NE. Two dead mice and five cockroaches were on glue boards in back storage. Yogurt and sliced cheese in the walk in cooler measured 48 to 49 degrees. It was the only refrigeration unit in the facility.

Media Arts Collaborative Charter School, 4401 Central Ave NE. Sanitizer in a wiping cloth container measured zero parts per million, corrected on site. Utensils with food debris were stored in a handwashing sink.

Morada Albuquerque, 1620 Indian School Rd NE. A floor drain near the handwashing station was missing its strainer and had an inadequate air gap. Both were corrected on site.
