Editor's Note

This week's report covers 55 inspections across Albuquerque. Three establishments were closed or reopened under an Unsatisfactory grade, all three tied to substantiated citizen complaints, and pest problems drove each case: live and dead cockroaches at Helens Bakery, rodent droppings throughout Fiesta Park Wellness, and cockroaches and flies at Golden Pride on Lomas. Shows that it pays to complain. Definitely gross though.

Closures & Major Violations

These establishments were closed by inspectors or received violations serious enough to pose an immediate public health risk. Violations in this category include evidence of pests, improper food temperature control, contaminated food-contact surfaces, or conditions that create imminent danger to public health. A follow-up inspection is required before any closed establishment can reopen, and some may face additional scrutiny or civil penalties.

Fiesta Park Wellness & Rehabilitation, 8820 Horizon Blvd NE. Inspected August 26. Inspectors found rodent droppings across the facility: on the warewashing floor, in bowls, lids, bins and plates on the kitchen line, on prep table shelves next to a cracker bin, and along floor and wall junctures throughout the kitchen. Staff were cleaning the droppings improperly. The facility was operating on an expired permit. It was ordered closed. A follow-up on August 28 upgraded it to Conditional Approved after corrective action.

Golden Pride Legacy LLC, 1830 Lomas Blvd NE. Inspected August 26 following a substantiated complaint. Live cockroaches and flies were in the kitchen. Green chile stew and beans were hot held at 126 and 127 degrees. Salad dressings sat past their seven day discard date, one dated August 6. The dish machine sanitizer read 25 ppm and no sanitizer buckets were set up. The facility was closed. An August 28 re-inspection reopened it with an Unsatisfactory grade; inspectors noted cleaning and repairs had begun but significant work remained.

Helens Bakery, 1014 San Pedro Dr NE. Inspected August 25. Inspectors counted more than 30 dead and more than 20 living cockroaches throughout food prep areas, cooking equipment, and inside cold holding units, with no pest control in place. Salsa and milk in the upright cooler measured 47 and 48 degrees and were discarded. The facility was operating on an expired permit and was closed pending re-inspection.

Olympia Cafe, 2210 Central Ave SE. Inspected August 27. More than 30 dead cockroaches were found across the kitchen, plus rodent droppings in the boiler room and dry storage. A fresh water hose sat submerged in a backed-up floor drain, and food contact equipment including the can opener, slicer, and meat shaver was heavily soiled. Raw meat was stored on undrained ice in a cardboard box. The facility was operating on an expired permit and was closed pending re-inspection.

Conditional Approvals

These establishments remain open but were given conditional approval following their inspection. They were found to have violations that, while not immediately dangerous, require prompt correction. Each must address the identified issues within a defined window set by inspectors. Failure to correct the violations within that timeframe triggers a mandatory re-inspection and may result in conditional status being revoked or the establishment being closed.

Crumbl Cookies, 10420 Coors Bypass NW, 104B. A substantiated complaint inspection. No sanitizer was made up for food contact surfaces, a leaking PVC drain line ran onto the floor, and Ortho Home Defense insecticide was stored in the bathroom to kill roaches. Needs sanitizer, plumbing repair, and removal of the unapproved pesticide.

Beehive Homes Bldg D, 6100 Wilshire Ave NE. Sanitizer in the wiping cloth container read 0 ppm because it was not set up, and the facility had no test kit to measure sanitizer concentration. Corrected on site and upgraded to Approved the same day.

Guava Tree, 6110 Alameda Blvd NE, 7. No certified food protection manager, employees without food handler cards, and an expired permit. Needs training records and payment to restore a valid permit.

Rexs Hamburgers, 5555 Montgomery Blvd NE, 16. Chopped green chile, sliced tomatoes, and guacamole held at 48 to 50 degrees in a failing prep table cooler. Needs the cold holding unit repaired; the operator is using ice baths in the interim.

Texas Roadhouse Holding LLC, 10030 Coors Blvd NW (Permit PT0147344). Black soil residue was dripping from the ice machine ceiling onto the ice, and butter, dressing, and boiled eggs held at 44 to 46 degrees. Needs the ice machine cleaned and cold holding brought under 41 degrees.

Notable Passes

These establishments passed their inspections and are approved to operate, but received violations worth knowing about. All entries include the establishment address so readers can identify locations they frequent.

A separate kitchen stored a portioning pan in a handwashing sink.

Cuidando Los Ninos Inc., 1500 Walter St SE. Dead cockroaches and ants in a dry storage trap, an improper snap trap, air gap problems at the floor drains, and raw shelled eggs stored directly above ready-to-eat produce.
