Editor's Note

This weeks report finally covers why Route 66 Diner was closed. Pretty gross and seemed like a training issue and not retaliatory from the employee. There solution to fire them I don't think fixes the issue long term. Ice machines were the single most common source of trouble: black, pink, and yellow organic growth turned up inside the machines at multiple places.

Closures & Major Violations

These establishments were closed by inspectors or received violations serious enough to pose an immediate public health risk. Violations in this category include evidence of pests, improper food temperature control, contaminated food-contact surfaces, or conditions that create imminent danger to public health. A follow-up inspection is required before any closed establishment can reopen, and some may face additional scrutiny or civil penalties.

66 Diner, 1405 Central Ave NE. Inspected July 14. Inspectors found rodent droppings and a live rodent under the milkshake counter, a live cockroach in the dining room, and watched an employee garnish a customer's burrito with the same gloved hands used to place raw burger patties on the grill. The burrito and lettuce were discarded. The diner was closed. A July 16 re-inspection confirmed the handwashing sink now reaches above 85 degrees and cleaning was underway; status was upgraded to Unsatisfactory, with re-inspection still required.

Long Cao LLC DBA Dragon Sushi, 6904 Menaul Blvd NE, Ste D. Inspected July 13. Raw salmon, tuna, and other fish sat at 47 to 54 degrees in the sushi case; cooked meat and fried items were held at room temperature between 103 and 123 degrees. Inspectors found a can of Raid in the sushi prep area and chlorine sanitizer stored on the floor at above 200 parts per million. Closed, re-inspection required.

Panera Bread #610055, 3550 NM-528. Inspected July 13. A live cockroach was in the beverage station, dead roaches were on the floor by the mop sink and bakery, and the warewashing machine could not reach temperature, running cycles at 84 and 97 degrees. Utensils sat in a dump sink of soiled water. Closed. A July 15 re-inspection upgraded the store to Unsatisfactory; some plumbing leaks and air gaps remained unresolved.

Presbyterian Health Care Systems, 1100 Central Ave SE. Inspected July 15. Sliced meat, chicken strips, and potato wedges were hot held between 110 and 126 degrees and discarded. Jelly opened on May 16 was still in use 53 days later, and rodent droppings were found by the steam kettles. Closed, re-inspection required. A second inspection the same day under a separate ID resulted in Conditional Approved status.

Stuffed Lust Sopapilla Company, 6320 Zuni Rd SE. Inspected July 18. The cold holding prep table was frozen over and non-functional, leaving red chile, cooked meat, cheese, and lettuce at 45 to 65 degrees. The three-compartment sink could not reach 110 degrees. This mobile unit was closed, re-inspection required.

El Ranchito Meat Market, 8319 Central Ave NE (Permit PT0126901). Inspected July 14. The store was selling house-made red and green chile salsas repackaged without labels, which requires a processing permit and HACCP plan; the products were pulled. The meat department handwashing sink was disconnected from its plumbing, and raw meat was stored uncovered in the walk-in freezer. Result: Unsatisfactory, re-inspection required. Two other permits at the same address passed.

Joe's Pasta House, 6650 Holly Ave NE. Inspected July 14. The dish machine dispensed no sanitizer or detergent, and the ice machine had slime and buildup on interior surfaces. An employee sliced bread with bare hands, and the handwashing sink was used to dump and melt ice. Result: Unsatisfactory, re-inspection required. A separate inspection the same day passed.

KFC, 12921 Central Ave NE. Inspected July 17. Roughly a dozen dead cockroaches were in the kitchen and dining room. Coleslaw and pot pies in the walk-in carried no date marks. Result: Unsatisfactory, re-inspection required.

Lindo Mexico Grill & Seafood, 5220 Eubank Blvd NE (Permit PT0158024). Inspected July 15. Sanitizer in the wiping cloth bucket measured 0 parts per million, the ice machine had yellow slime buildup, and the facility was operating on an expired permit. Result: Unsatisfactory, re-inspection required. A related permit at the address received Conditional Approved, and a corrective action visit the same day returned it to Approved.

Royal Buffet Restaurant, 6111 San Mateo Blvd NE. Inspected July 16. Crab meat sat at 72 degrees and a sushi roll at 60 degrees at the self-service buffet; steam table items were double panned and not held hot. Six unlabeled chemical spray bottles were in use. Result: Unsatisfactory, re-inspection required. A separate inspection the same day passed.

Sonic Drive In, 11715 Central Ave NE. Inspected July 16. An ice scoop sat in stagnant water next to the ice machine, degreaser was stored on top of Ziploc bags and next to utensils, and raw burger patties were stored above red chile. Result: Unsatisfactory, re-inspection required. A separate inspection the same day passed.

Spicy Junction LLC, 5017 Menaul Blvd NE. Inspected July 14. A large stock pot of beef was cooled overnight in a cold holding unit with no ice or cooling equipment, and cold holding across the kitchen ran from 46 to 56 degrees while the A/C was down. Bleach and sanitizer sat in unlabeled spray bottles. Result: Unsatisfactory, re-inspection required. A separate inspection the same day passed.

Taco Cabana, 10210 Central Ave NE. Inspected July 14. An insect electrocution device was mounted over the main cook line, an employee moved ready-to-eat rice by hand, and chile relleno and cheese were cold held at 51 and 54 degrees. Result: Unsatisfactory, re-inspection required. A separate July 14 inspection received Conditional Approved, and a July 15 corrective action visit returned it to Approved after the ice machine was cleaned.

Conditional Approvals

These establishments remain open but were given conditional approval following their inspection. They were found to have violations that, while not immediately dangerous, require prompt correction. Each must address the identified issues within a defined window set by inspectors. Failure to correct the violations within that timeframe triggers a mandatory re-inspection and may result in conditional status being revoked or the establishment being closed.
